In 1811, when the Wilson Price Hunt Expedition explored this region looking for a water route to the Pacific, they attempted to float down the Snake River in canoes and rafts. A few weeks prior to their arrival at Henry's Fort, near present day St. Anthony, ldaho, they encountered serious difficulties that made it obvious that a trip by water would be hazardous.In frustration the party christened the river La Maudite Riviere Enragee" (The Accursed Mad River). The name Mad River appeared on some of the maps of the region until the 1840's when the name "Lewis Fork of the Columbia "became popular.In the 1850's the river was named after the Snake Indians by a party of U.S. Army Surveyors.
