In the prehistoric past, during the summer months, the aboriginal Northern Paiutes and Shoshoni fished for salmon in this region. They camped in the immediate vicinity of Clear Lake while fishing in the estuaries of the many springs that flow into the Snake River.These encampments also provided an opportunity for trade and social reunions. Along the length of the Snake River Canyon, between Shoshone Falls and Swan Falls, Paiute and Shoshone artifacts have been found in many camp locations.The Clear Lake Country Club’s location is an ancient encampment site of aboriginal fisherman.
