At the turn of the century Otis and Molly Syster began raising alfalfa on the island in Clear Lake. They watered their crop with spring water delivered by a flume. The remnants of the flume's supports can be seen in the lake.To get the alfalfa hay to the mainland they constructed a wagon bridge northwest of Number 8 green. After the farm operation ceased, the bridge deteriorated to a few dilapidated logs lying across the stream.These logs allowed only foot traffic. Four generations of fishermen and hikers have used the footbridge for access to the island.
